The Garifuna drum tradition is one of the things that makes Dangriga worth visiting outside of Settlement Day. The town has produced several master drummers and a number of informal schools where visitors can learn the basics of the punta rhythm. The drums themselves — made from hardwood and animal skin — are handcrafted locally.
Sessions are informal and timing depends on the drummers' schedules. Ask at your guesthouse or inquire at the Garifuna Heritage Foundation on Commerce Street. A few hours with a local drummer gives context for the music you hear throughout the town.
