Tobacco Caye

Tiny reef island 26km offshore — snorkelling directly from the beach

Tobacco Caye is a tiny island — about 200 metres by 100 metres — sitting directly on the Belize Barrier Reef, 26 km from Dangriga. A few guesthouses occupy the entire island, there is no road, no airport, and the reef begins just a few fins-kicks from the beach. Snorkelling is immediate and excellent, with coral formations and reef fish visible without a boat.

Boat transfers from Dangriga leave from the river near the North Stann Creek bridge, typically around 9am, with the crossing taking 45 minutes to an hour in good weather. The island is small enough that you can walk around it in ten minutes, which is part of its appeal — there is genuinely nothing to do but snorkel, eat, and sit in a hammock.
