New River Boat Trip

The boat journey from Orange Walk Town to Lamanai takes about 1.5 hours each way and is a highlight in itself. The route passes through the New River Lagoon, a wide, calm waterway edged with lilies, mangroves, and gallery forest. Guides point out birds — jabiru storks, kingfishers, snail kites, anhingas — as well as Morelet's crocodiles resting on the banks and howler monkeys in the trees.

Most operators depart early morning and return in the early afternoon. The return trip runs in the opposite direction with the afternoon light, which makes for good photography. Tours are bookable through hotels in Orange Walk Town or directly with boatmen at the dock on the edge of town. Bring sun protection and insect repellent; both become essential on the open water.
