San Estevan Maya Site

The San Estevan archaeological site sits about 13 kilometres north of Orange Walk Town near the village of the same name. The ruins include a large plaza and platform mounds, the tallest reaching around 17 metres, that were once part of a ceremonial centre active from the Middle Preclassic through the Classic period. Formal excavation work here has been limited, and much of the site remains unexcavated beneath jungle growth.

San Estevan sees almost no tourist traffic compared to Lamanai, which means visitors who make the trip have the ruins largely to themselves. The approach through the northern Belize countryside — sugar fields, Maya villages, and secondary forest — is pleasant, and the site provides a useful counterpoint to Lamanai's more thoroughly excavated structures. Local guides from the village can usually be arranged on arrival.
