The three summits that loom over Canmore's south and east skyline are known in Stoney Nakoda as Ehagay Nakoda — "Grizzly Bear Mountain." The name "Three Sisters" (referring to the three distinct peaks: Big Sister, Middle Sister, and Little Sister) was given by European settlers in the late 19th century and remains in common use alongside the Indigenous name, which was formally recognised in 2021.
Big Sister, at 2,936 metres, is the most frequently climbed of the three, reached via a long off-trail scramble from the Spray Lakes Road. Middle and Little Sisters involve more technical climbing and are best left to experienced mountaineers. For most visitors, the peaks are a backdrop rather than a destination — they're visible from almost everywhere in Canmore and from the Trans-Canada Highway east of town. The views from Ha Ling Peak and Grassi Lakes include excellent angles of all three summits.
