Atlas Coal Mine is the anchor that makes East Coulee worth the detour. The site preserves the machinery, buildings, and raw valley setting of the Drumheller coal era, including the great wooden tipple that still dominates the slope.
Take a guided tour if one is running. The mine is far better when someone explains how the valley worked, how hard the labour was, and why so much infrastructure survived here.
