The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is Fort McMurray's essential stop. It explains the geology, extraction technology, environmental questions, and local history of the Athabasca oil sands, with indoor exhibits and heavy equipment outside.
It is not a neutral landscape museum, and it should not be read as one. Visit because the oil sands are one of Canada's most consequential industrial regions, and this is the easiest public place to understand how they work.
