The Dutch Creek Hoodoos are the best non-pool sight near Fairmont: eroded sandstone cliffs rising above the highway, with trails that lead to viewpoints over the Columbia Valley. The formations are fragile, dry, and brighter than the surrounding forested mountains, which makes them feel like a little badlands pocket in the Kootenays.
The hike is short enough for a spare afternoon, but bring water and stay on established paths. The hoodoos are easier to damage than they look.
