Island Lake Lodge sits up Cedar Valley west of town, surrounded by trails through old-growth cedar, Douglas fir, spruce, and alpine basins. The easier walks are enough for a half-day among big trees; stronger hikers can push higher toward ridges and lake views.
The old-growth forest is the real surprise. Fernie feels dry and Rocky Mountain on the valley floor, then this side valley suddenly turns into a pocket of interior rainforest.
