Gwaii Haanas

Remote island sanctuary of Haida culture and wildlife

The Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site protects 138 islands at the southern end of Haida Gwaii, where ancient Haida village sites, temperate rainforest, and extraordinary marine life coexist in one of Canada's most remote protected areas. Over a million seabirds nest here during breeding season, and the waters hold orcas, humpback whales, and sea lions.

The park is accessible only by boat or floatplane, and all visitors must attend an orientation session before entering. Guided Haida Watchmen programs at historic village sites like SGang Gwaay — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — offer a chance to see centuries-old totem poles still standing where they were raised. Plan well ahead, as visitor numbers are strictly limited.
