North Pacific Cannery

National historic salmon cannery on pilings at Port Edward, preserved with workers' houses and machinery.

The North Pacific Cannery, built in 1889 near the mouth of the Skeena River, is one of British Columbia's best surviving salmon-cannery sites. Wooden buildings stand on pilings over the water, with old machinery, net lofts, bunkhouses, and offices showing how industrial fishing shaped the coast.

It is near Port Edward, about 20 minutes by road from Prince Rupert. Take a guided tour if one is running; the labour history, racial segregation, and seasonal rhythm of the cannery are the point, not just the weathered buildings.
