Salmon Glacier is the big prize of the Stewart-Hyder detour. The road leaves Stewart, crosses briefly into Hyder, then climbs back into British Columbia toward a high viewpoint over a long river of ice and its surrounding peaks.
Go only when the road is open and the weather is clear enough to make the climb worthwhile. It is a rough mountain road, not a casual town drive, so fuel up, carry food and water, and ask locally about current conditions before setting out.
