The estuary boardwalk starts near the visitor centre and runs across the tidal flats at the head of the Portland Canal. It is short, flat, and useful in almost any weather, with wetland plants underfoot and mountains closing in on three sides.
Come early or late if you care about birds and reflections. In a town dominated by glacier drives, this is the easy place to slow down without getting back in the car.
