The Nechako River widens out just upstream of town into a series of shallow flats and gravel bars that have become one of the most reliable bird-watching spots in central British Columbia. The sanctuary covers a few square kilometres along the river, with a footpath following the bank and benches looking out over the water.
In April and October the river fills with trumpeter swans and Canada geese, with smaller numbers of ducks, grebes, and the occasional bald eagle hanging around for the leftovers. Outside migration the place is quieter but still pretty — a flat walk through cottonwoods with the river always in view. Mornings are best for both wildlife and light.
