Vanderhoof Museum

The museum is a collection of restored heritage buildings clustered along the old Yellowhead Highway alignment at the south edge of town. A schoolhouse, a trapper's cabin, a homesteader's house, and the original Vanderhoof telegraph office have been hauled in from the surrounding district and laid out as a small open-air village.

It is the kind of museum where the volunteers know the families that built the cabins, and the labelling is handwritten. An hour is enough to walk through it. The adjoining OK Cafe is part of the heritage site and a fine place to follow up with pie.

A story
Vanderhoof was named not after a settler but after Herbert Vanderhoof, a Chicago publicist hired by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1914 to lure American writers and homesteaders north — he visited the spot exactly once.
