Shoal Lake Mounted Police Museum

The Shoal Lake Mounted Police Museum in Lakeview Park is Manitoba's official museum dedicated to the North-West Mounted Police and its successor the RCMP. The museum building itself is a faithful replica of the original NWMP barracks built at the south end of Shoal Lake in 1875 — one of the earliest police outposts on the Canadian prairie.

Inside, the collection covers two eras: the rough frontier days of the NWMP and the evolution into the modern RCMP. Displays include uniforms, handcuffs, leg irons, and equipment from the Musical Ride. The museum is modest in scale but thoughtful in presentation. Open July and August, Wednesday to Sunday.

A story
The North-West Mounted Police detachment at Shoal Lake was established in 1875, the year the NWMP first pushed into the prairies. The site served one of the longest continuously operating police detachments in Canadian history — a fact that makes this modest museum a genuine piece of frontier police history, not just a replica.
