Campobello Island

Bay of Fundy island in New Brunswick, reached by road from Lubec, Maine.

Campobello Island sits in the Bay of Fundy off the coast of New Brunswick, though its only road connection is a bridge from Lubec, Maine — making it a Canadian island you enter through the United States. A seasonal ferry also connects to Deer Island, New Brunswick.

The main draw is the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the only international park jointly maintained by Canada and the United States. Franklin D. Roosevelt's family summered here for decades, and his 34-room "cottage" is preserved as it was when the family used it. It was here, in 1921, that Roosevelt contracted polio. The park grounds include walking trails through spruce forest and along the rocky shoreline, with views across Passamaquoddy Bay.

Beyond the park, Campobello is a quiet island of fishing wharves, lighthouses, and tidal pools. The Bay of Fundy tides are dramatic here — some of the highest in the world — and whale-watching boats operate from nearby waters in summer.
