Middle Island

Small river island memorializing Irish famine immigrants quarantined on the Miramichi.

Middle Island is a small island in the Miramichi River with a large story. Irish immigrants were quarantined here in the late 1840s after falling ill during the Atlantic crossing from famine-era Ireland.

The island now has a museum and parkland, open mainly in summer. It is the clearest place in Miramichi to understand why the city calls itself Canada's Irish Capital.
