Glynmill Inn

The Glynmill Inn is a handsome 1924 Tudor Revival building that was originally constructed as company housing for the senior management of the Bowater pulp mill. The British mill owners brought British architectural tastes with them, and the result is a strikingly out-of-place half-timbered manor sitting beside a small millpond in an industrial Newfoundland city. It has operated as a hotel since the mill era and is now Corner Brook's most characterful place to stay.

Even if you are not staying here, the building and its setting are worth a short detour. The millpond behind the inn is peaceful, popular with locals for an evening walk, and a reminder that the company town model of the early 20th century came with its own particular aesthetic. The Glynmill sits on the edge of what was once a carefully planned company neighbourhood, and some of the surrounding streets still have the feel of that original design.
