Marble Mountain

Marble Mountain, about 12km east of Corner Brook in the Humber Valley, is the only real alpine ski area in Newfoundland and one of the best on the Atlantic coast. The vertical drop is 488 metres — respectable by any standard — and the terrain is genuinely varied, with runs for beginners through to serious experts. The snowfall here is heavy and reliable; the mountain's position catches Atlantic moisture as it moves inland, and the Humber Valley regularly gets more snow than most of eastern Canada.

In summer the mountain switches to hiking and mountain biking, and the gondola runs for sightseers wanting the views over the valley without the legwork. The drive from Corner Brook along the Humber River is pleasant in itself — the river here is one of the best salmon rivers in Newfoundland, and you will often see anglers working the pools. Marble Mountain is worth the short detour whether or not you intend to ski.
