Railway Society of Newfoundland

The Railway Society of Newfoundland maintains a collection of historic narrow-gauge locomotives and rolling stock from the Newfoundland Railway, which ran across the island from Port aux Basques to St John's until 1988. The Newfoundland Railway was always a curious thing — narrow gauge (3ft 6in) where most of North America runs standard gauge — and the society does well by this distinctive heritage. The equipment on display includes steam locomotives and passenger cars that once made the famously slow trans-island run, nicknamed "the Newfie Bullet" with cheerful local irony.

It is an outdoor and semi-outdoor collection rather than a polished museum, which gives it an authentic, slightly rough-edged atmosphere. Railway enthusiasts will want longer than most. For general visitors, it is an interesting 30 minutes, particularly combined with the museum next door. The narrow-gauge railways of Newfoundland were an important part of how the island was settled and connected, and the society keeps that story alive.
