Rencontre East Harbour

Ferry landing and waterfront heart of one of Newfoundland's last roadless outports.

The harbour is the first and most important sight in Rencontre East. The passenger ferry noses in from Bay L'Argent or Pool's Cove, freight and groceries move by hand, and the village runs along the water in a way that makes the lack of a road feel immediate rather than quaint.

Walk it slowly. The appeal is not a single monument but the whole arrangement of wharf, houses, boats, breakwaters, and hills. On a calm day it is beautiful; in bad weather it explains why people here take the sea seriously.
