Rencontre Lake

Inland lake reached from the outport, with waterfalls, cabins, and old mining traces.

Rencontre Lake is the inland counterpoint to the harbour: a long, quiet body of water north of town, reached by local boat, trail, or arranged excursion rather than by road. Tours use it for a fuller look at the backcountry, with waterfalls, mountain walking, and beaches that make the village feel like a small doorway into a much larger landscape.

The lake also carries one of the stranger bits of local history. Ackley City, on its shore, was tied to a short-lived molybdenum mine discovered in the 1880s. There is not a polished heritage site here, which is part of the point. Go with someone local if you want more than a glance at the map.
