Chedabucto Bay

Sea kayaking and birdwatching on a beautiful tidal bay

Chedabucto Bay is the real draw for nature-minded visitors to Guysborough. The bay's sheltered inner waters are excellent for sea kayaking, with quiet coves and rocky islets that harbour harbour seals, great blue herons, bald eagles, and — during spring and fall migrations — large concentrations of shorebirds and waterfowl.

The bay has a working fishing fleet, and you will see lobster boats and draggers heading out early morning from Guysborough Harbour. Kayak access points are available near the town waterfront. The outer bay is more exposed and best left to experienced paddlers; the inner reaches near town are calm and manageable. No outfitter currently operates here — bring your own boat or arrange rental from one of the outfitters in Antigonish or Cape Breton.

A story
Chedabucto Bay takes its name from the Mi'kmaq word for 'long bay,' and at nearly 40 kilometres in length it earns the description — the bay runs deep into the highland interior of Guysborough County, sheltered by Cape Canso to the north.
