Brockville Railway Tunnel

Canada's first railway tunnel, now a seasonal illuminated walk beneath downtown.

Built between 1854 and 1860, the Brockville Railway Tunnel carried rail traffic from the Ottawa Valley down to the St. Lawrence waterfront. Today you can walk the half-kilometre passage, with coloured lights picking out the stonework and mineral stains. It is odd, local, and genuinely memorable.
