The Abitibi River runs through the heart of Iroquois Falls, offering accessible flatwater paddling and fishing close to town. Walleye, pike, and perch are the target species; a local outfitter can arrange canoe rentals and basic fishing guide services. The riverbanks are undeveloped on the downstream stretches, making for a quietly wild experience within sight of the town.
Abitibi River
A story
The Abitibi River was the reason Iroquois Falls exists: the river provided both the water flow to power the mill and the transportation corridor to bring timber down from the boreal forest. The river was harnessed by a series of dams, and the resulting calmer water between them is excellent paddling country. The section near town passes through mixed boreal forest, and the river bends hide occasional sightings of beaver, otter, and great blue heron.
