Rene Brunelle Provincial Park

A provincial park about 15 kilometres south of Iroquois Falls, with camping, a sand beach on Lake Commando, and boreal forest trails. The lake is good for swimming in summer and the fishing — walleye, perch, northern pike — is productive. A calm, undervisited park ideal for a night or two away from the Trans-Canada corridor.

A story
Rene Brunelle is one of the quieter provincial parks in northeastern Ontario, which is saying something in a region where the parks rarely get crowded. The park was named after a former provincial cabinet minister and sits in classic Canadian Shield boreal country — black spruce, tamarack bogs, Canadian Shield outcrops, and the lake itself, which is large enough to feel genuinely remote from a canoe. Moose are commonly spotted along the park roads at dusk.
