Doube's Trestle Bridge

A 200-metre-long railway viaduct converted to a pedestrian and cycling path as part of the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor. It strides across a beaver-dammed wetland on slender steel piers around seventeen metres above the water, and the view from the middle of the bridge — looking down at herons in the cattails and across at unbroken forest — is unexpectedly dramatic for a country trail.

Access is from the small parking lot off County Road 38 north of Omemee. The bridge is part of a longer rail-trail that runs from Lindsay all the way to Peterborough, so you can extend the walk in either direction.

A story
The bridge carried trains between Lindsay and Peterborough from 1881 until the line was abandoned in 1989. When the steel deck was converted to a walking path, the engineers left the original wooden ties exposed between the planks — look down and you can see straight through to the marsh seventeen metres below.
