Bethune Memorial House

National historic site in the birthplace of surgeon, activist, and China war doctor Norman Bethune.

Bethune Memorial House is the Victorian manse where Norman Bethune was born in 1890. The Parks Canada site follows him from small-town Ontario to experimental surgery, public-health politics, the Spanish Civil War, and his celebrated medical work in China.

It is a more interesting stop than a normal birthplace museum because Bethune's life kept widening. In Gravenhurst, it gives the town a story that reaches far beyond Muskoka.
