St. James on-the-Lines

Wooden 1830s Anglican garrison church, one of Penetanguishene's clearest military-era survivals.

St. James on-the-Lines is a small wooden Anglican church built for Penetanguishene's military and civilian community in the 1830s. Its plain frame construction makes it feel closer to a frontier garrison chapel than a grand parish church.

The church is worth seeing because it gives the old naval yard a human scale. After Discovery Harbour, this is where the garrison story feels local.
