The Smiths Falls Bascule Bridge is a rare surviving railway rolling-lift bridge over the Rideau Canal, built for the Canadian Northern Railway in 1912-13. It no longer carries trains, but it remains locked in its raised position, an industrial landmark beside the water.
The bridge is a National Historic Site of Canada and pairs naturally with the nearby lockstations and railway museum. It is not a long visit, but it is exactly the kind of odd, place-specific structure that makes Smiths Falls more than just another small Ontario town.
