The St. Joseph Island Museum is a good counterweight to Fort St. Joseph. Its six historic buildings hold thousands of objects tied to island life: farming, settlement, domestic work, transport, and the small communities that grew after the military era faded.
It is best visited early in the day, before driving the island loop. The displays give ordinary roads and farmsteads a bit more meaning once you are back outside.
