Bridge 13 is a vertical lift bridge in the heart of downtown Welland, carrying traffic over the canal on East Main Street. When a ship needs to pass, the bridge deck rises vertically between its twin towers — the whole span lifts to allow clearance for vessels up to about 40 metres above water. It is a working piece of industrial infrastructure that doubles as a minor spectacle when in operation.
The bridge is the focal point of Welland's downtown canal frontage, and the surrounding area has been developed as a pedestrian-friendly waterfront. A small park on the east bank gives good views of the lock and the bridge, and the canal-side murals are concentrated along this stretch. When a ship approaches and traffic stops, it draws a small crowd even on ordinary weekdays.
