Casino Regina

Casino Regina is one of the more atmospheric casinos in western Canada, partly because it operates inside a 1911 railway station with the original waiting hall intact. The high ceilings, limestone columns, and ornate plasterwork of the former Union Station give the casino a grandeur that purpose-built gaming facilities rarely achieve. The programming has expanded beyond the gaming floor to include a showroom for touring musicians and comedians, several restaurants, and a bar that uses the original station architecture to reasonable effect.

The casino is operated by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority and channels a significant portion of its revenues into First Nations communities, health, and education — a model that has been studied by other jurisdictions for its effectiveness. The gaming floor itself is standard casino fare: slots, table games, poker. If you are going to spend an evening at a casino, the building is a good reason to choose this one over a generic alternative.

A story
Casino Regina occupies the former Union Station building on South Railway Street, a 1911 Beaux-Arts structure that served as Regina's main railway terminal until Via Rail reduced service in the 1990s. Rather than demolishing the building, Saskatchewan converted it into a casino, preserving the grand waiting hall with its high ceilings and limestone columns. The combination of a heritage railway station and a gambling operation is peculiarly Canadian.
