Mosaic Stadium and the Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are central to Regina's identity in a way that is difficult to explain to outsiders but immediately obvious once you're here. Green is the provincial colour for football season — Rider green, specifically — and the population of Saskatchewan follows the team with the intensity that larger cities divide among multiple franchises. The result is a remarkable atmosphere at Mosaic Stadium, which opened in 2017 and holds about 33,000 people.

A CFL game is a distinctly Canadian sporting experience: rules that differ noticeably from American football (three downs instead of four, a larger field, a different scoring system), a tailgate culture that starts hours before kickoff, and an entirely partisan crowd that has waited through the offseason for this. If you are in Regina between late June and November when the regular season runs, getting a ticket to a home game is worthwhile — particularly the games against Calgary or Winnipeg, which carry extra historical weight. Single-game tickets are available through the Roughriders website.

A story
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are the only community-owned team in the Canadian Football League and one of the most collectively owned sports franchises in North America. About 30,000 shareholders own the club — Saskatchewan residents who buy shares not for financial return (the shares have no dividend and cannot be resold) but purely out of civic loyalty. On game days, roughly one person in eight in the entire province is watching the Riders play.
