The RCMP Heritage Centre sits within the RCMP Depot, which remains an active training facility — you are visiting a working police training campus, not a decommissioned historic site. The museum component, designed by Arthur Erickson and opened in 2007, traces the history of the force from its 1873 origins as the North-West Mounted Police through the march west, the Riel Rebellions, the Klondike Gold Rush, and the modern era.
The exhibits are well-done and don't shy away from the complicated parts of the RCMP's history — the role of the force in suppressing Indigenous communities, the residential school enforcement, and the political controversies that have followed the force through its history. But the dominant tone is understandably institutional pride, and that pride is well-placed: the force has accumulated a genuinely impressive record over 150 years. The Sergeant Major's Parade on weekday mornings and the outdoor Sunset Retreat Ceremony on Tuesday evenings in summer are free and worth attending — the precision drill and the pageantry of the musical ride are both impressive in person.
