Grand Cayman

Cayman Islands beach island where Seven Mile Beach and western-shore diving define the visitor scene.

Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and handles the vast majority of visitors. The capital, George Town, sits on the western shore. Seven Mile Beach stretches north from the capital — this is where most hotels, restaurants, and tourist activity is concentrated. The eastern side of the island is quieter, more residential, and largely overlooked by visitors in a hurry.

The main draw is the water. Seven Mile Beach is one of the Caribbean's finest stretches of sand, calm and clear, with good snorkelling offshore. Stingray City in the North Sound is the island's most famous attraction. The Cayman Turtle Centre in West Bay is popular with families. Diving off the western and northern shores is excellent, with the Kittiwake wreck near Seven Mile Beach a particular highlight.

George Town fills up dramatically on cruise ship days, when thousands of day-trippers pour through. The shops and streets around the waterfront become very congested. If you want a quieter experience of the capital, check ship schedules and plan accordingly.
