Museo de las Parrandas Remedianas

The Museo de las Parrandas Remedianas is dedicated entirely to Las Parrandas — Remedios's raucous December festival that pits the town's two rival neighbourhoods against each other in an annual battle of floats, fireworks, and elaborate illuminated towers. The museum occupies a colonial building a short walk from the Plaza Mayor and houses a permanent collection of working models, costumes, historical photographs, and the actual mechanisms used to animate past festival floats.

Even outside December, this museum gives you a real sense of the scale and intensity of the festival. The models of past winning floats — some several storeys high — show the extraordinary craftsmanship involved. If you cannot be in Remedios for Las Parrandas, this is the next best thing. Entry is cheap and the staff are often happy to explain the rivalry in detail.

A story
Las Parrandas of Remedios is one of Cuba's oldest festivals, dating to 1829 when a parish priest sent altar boys through the streets banging drums and pots to rouse the faithful to Christmas Eve mass. The neighbourhood rivalry that grew from this has never stopped escalating — floats now reach several storeys high, fireworks battles last through the night, and the competition between El Carmen and San Salvador is treated with deadly seriousness by locals.
