Cerro El Pital is the highest peak in El Salvador at 2,730 metres, rising from the cloud forest along the Honduran border 12 kilometres from La Palma. The mountain is the primary reason visitors who are not especially interested in folk art come to this corner of the country.
The approach from La Palma climbs steadily through coffee plantations and then into cloud forest — a habitat of bromeliads, tree ferns, and a surprising density of birds. The cloud settles in most afternoons, so early morning starts give the best chance of clear views from the summit. On good days the panorama extends across the Honduran highlands to the north and down to the Salvadoran coast to the south.
The road to the base of the peak is passable in a standard vehicle for most of the route; the final stretch benefits from 4WD. Horses can be hired in Las Pilas, a small farming community near the trailhead.
