Volcán Conchagua

Volcán Conchagua rises immediately south of La Unión and gives the eastern coast its signature view. The volcano is forested rather than stark, with roads and tracks climbing toward viewpoints over the Gulf of Fonseca. On a clear morning the islands, Honduran coast, and Nicaraguan side of the gulf are all visible.

Access is easiest by four-wheel drive or with a local operator; the upper road can be rough, especially after rain. Camping trips to the miradores are popular with Salvadoran travellers, but a day visit is enough if you start early. Bring water, sun protection, and patience for changing cloud.

A story
Conchagua's summit views are unusual in Central America because the horizon is political as well as scenic. From the miradores you can look over Salvadoran islands, toward Honduras, and across the gulf to Nicaragua, all from one volcanic ridge above a working port.
