Anse-à-Galets is the administrative centre of Gonâve Island and the arrival point for all boats from the mainland. It is a small Haitian coastal town in the full sense — market stalls, motor bikes, concrete buildings in various states of construction, a waterfront where fishing boats come and go. The population is several thousand; the town has a church, a health clinic, and a market. Beyond that, infrastructure is minimal.
For visitors, this is less a destination than an orientation point. You arrive here, arrange any onward transport (moto-taxis are available for hire), and use it as a base. The market is worth a walk-through — the usual mix of produce, second-hand clothes, and household goods that characterises Haitian markets everywhere. The waterfront at dusk, with fishing boats silhouetted against the sky, is the most photogenic moment the town offers.
