Canouan Reef

Barrier reef with sheltered turquoise lagoons

A barrier reef runs along the eastern, Atlantic-facing side of Canouan, sheltering a series of calm turquoise lagoons. The coral is in good health and the water clarity is exceptional — visibility frequently exceeds 30 metres. Snorkelling is possible directly from the beach without a boat; diving operators are based at the resort on the northern half of the island.

The reef supports a varied ecosystem: eagle rays, spotted moray eels, queen angelfish, and the occasional nurse shark are all regular sightings. The nearby Tobago Cays, reachable by day charter, offer some of the finest snorkelling in the entire Caribbean.

A story
The reef running along Canouan's Atlantic side is part of the Tobago Cays Marine Park system — one of the best-preserved coral ecosystems in the Eastern Caribbean. Sea turtles nest on the beaches nearby and are commonly spotted in the shallows.
