Kite Beach (Big Sand)

Kite Beach, also known as Big Sand, stretches along the northeast shore of Union Island and is the island's kitesurfing hub. The consistent trade winds and shallow lagoon water make it ideal for beginners and experienced riders alike. Several operators based on the beach offer lessons and equipment rental, and the kitesurfing community gives this corner of the island a lively, international feel.

The beach itself is narrow but long, with good swimming at both ends where the kite lanes are clear. Even if you have no interest in kitesurfing, it is worth walking the length of the beach to watch the riders working the wind. In the evening, the kite bars serve cold beers and run movie nights.

A story
Union Island has become one of the Caribbean's top kitesurfing destinations because the trade winds blow with unusual consistency here — typically 15 to 25 knots from December through June. The Grenadines channel funnels and accelerates the winds, giving a reliable, long-season swell that draws serious riders from Europe and North America.
