Fort William H. Seward was the first permanent United States Army post in Alaska, built during the gold-rush era on a bluff above Haines. The parade ground and old officers' buildings still give the district a clear shape, quite different from the looser waterfront below.
After the army left, the fort became Port Chilkoot, and many buildings now hold galleries, lodging, studios, and local businesses. Walk it with a map from the visitor centre if you want the layers to make sense.
