Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park

Coastal state park with World War II ruins, spruce forest, lake trails, and sea cliffs.

Fort Abercrombie is the best short outing from Kodiak town. The park preserves the remains of a Second World War coastal defence installation, but it is just as much about the setting: spruce forest, wildflower meadows, Lake Gertrude, surf-pounded cliffs, and views over the North Pacific.

Give it a couple of hours rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. The bunkers and gun emplacements are interesting, but the trails and headlands are what make the park feel like Kodiak in miniature.
