Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

The day boat cruises from Seward into Kenai Fjords National Park are among the best wildlife experiences in Alaska. Full-day tours reach the outermost fjords where tidewater glaciers calve house-sized chunks of ice into the sea with a thunderous crash. En route, you will see humpback whales breaching, orca pods hunting, Steller sea lions hauled out on rocky outcrops, and colonies of puffins, kittiwakes, and murres nesting on sheer cliff faces.

Half-day tours are cheaper and stay closer to Seward but still offer excellent wildlife viewing in Resurrection Bay. Major Alaskan Discovery and Kenai Fjords Tours are the main operators, running multiple daily departures from Seward's boat harbor. Book in advance — the boats fill up, and weather cancellations mean operators often reschedule passengers to later departures. A full-day tour is unambiguously worth the extra cost if you have the time.

A story
Kenai Fjords National Park takes its name from the Norwegian word for narrow coastal inlets carved by glaciers. The park's Harding Icefield, which feeds more than 40 glaciers, is one of the largest ice fields in the United States and the source of the tidewater glaciers that boats visit on the day cruises from Seward.
