About 50 km south of Tuba City at the junction of US 89 and AZ 64, the Cameron Trading Post has been operating since 1916, when the Cameron brothers built a single-room post next to the new suspension bridge over the Little Colorado River gorge. The complex has expanded into a stone-and-vigas hotel, a high-end gallery of older Navajo and Pueblo work, and a cavernous gift shop selling everything from cheap dreamcatchers to museum-quality kachinas.
The on-site restaurant in the 1950s dining room is the best meal for a long way in any direction, with proper Navajo tacos on frybread and a strong list of regional dishes. The gallery, in a separate stone building behind the main complex, is essentially a small museum — pre-1940 Navajo rugs, old silver, and pawn-quality jewellery, all for sale at serious prices. Even if you don't buy, walk through. The trading post sits on the rim of the Little Colorado gorge, and the old steel suspension bridge alongside is worth a few minutes.
