Mission San Cayetano de Calabazas

Ruined Spanish mission site south of Tubac, visitable by guided tour

Mission San Cayetano de Calabazas is one of the quieter Spanish colonial sites near Tubac. The mission was founded in 1756, its church was finished in 1773, and the settlement was later abandoned after repeated Apache attacks and frontier upheaval.

The surviving ruins are part of Tumacacori National Historical Park, but they are not an open wander-in stop. Visits are by guided tour, which suits the place: without the story, these low adobe remains are easy to underestimate.
