Williams's main street is one of the most intact examples of Route 66 commercial architecture anywhere on the old highway. The buildings date from the 1920s through the 1960s and include classic neon-signed motels, diners, and service stations in various states of preservation. The Historic Business District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Walking the few blocks of the commercial strip takes about an hour if you stop to look at buildings and read the interpretive signs. Several of the old motor lodges are still operating, and the diners serve classic American road food — burgers, pie, and coffee — in period surroundings. The stretch is most evocative at night when the neon lights up.
