Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum

Old-school wax museum on Central Avenue, open since 1962

A classic American roadside wax museum, opened in 1962 and run with the same matter-of-fact showmanship ever since. Around 100 figures cover the predictable territory — presidents, movie stars, and historical scenes — but there's a strong streak of the macabre, with grisly biblical tableaux and torture scenes in the basement Chamber of Horrors.

It is not pretending to be art. The fun is in the slightly off-model faces, the dim lighting, and the sense that nothing about the place has changed in decades. Pair it with the Gangster Museum and Tiny Town for a tour of the Central Avenue tourist strip at its 1960s peak.
